Anibal Ferro

DATELINE: New Bedford Anibal P. Ferro 90 of New Bedford passed away Thursday July 22, 2010 peacefully at home. He was the husband of the late Eugenia “Jennie” (Carvalho) Ferro and son of the late Jacintho Alves Ferro and Maria Conceicao (Piedade-Fernandes) Ferro. He was born in New Bedford and had lived in Fairhaven before moving back to New Bedford for most of his life. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s church, New Bedford. He was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Joseph’s church in Fairhaven where he previously attended. He was the treasurer of the “Portuguese Feast” in 1948 and was a member of the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento. Mr. Ferro’s mother owned and operated the Willow Tree Ice Cream Parlors and Anibal was one of the first to make the ice cream. He was also a pattern designer for Calvin Clothing, Justin’s and Deerfield Clothing and took many courses at the Rhode Island School of Design. Above all he enjoyed family gatherings and just attended a large party in November celebrating his 90 th birthday. He took pride in playing music. He played the saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, mandolin and was a member of the local musicians union. He was one of the initial organizers of the New Bedford Symphony and had the “Village Combo” for a time. He also played for the City Band, Mattapoisett band, Marion band, Cape Verdean band, the Falmouth band and often played on Martha’s Vineyard. He also played at the World’s Fair in New York. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include 3 daughters Laura Ferro Gula and her husband Michael P. of North Dartmouth, Lorraine Azar of Fairhaven, Diane M. Fiano of New Bedford; his son David Ferro and his wife Jeannine of Acushnet; his brothers Joseph, Jessie, Paul, and George Ferro; his sisters Margaret Alves, Sr. Cecila Ferro SSD and Sr. Mary Ferro SSD; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was the father-in-law of the late Habib Azar, grandfather of the late Sadie Nicole Ferro, great-grandfather of the late Kalib Barboza and brother of the late Gilly, Noe and John Ferro. His funeral mass will be said 9am Tuesday at St. Mary’s church New Bedford. Visitation will be Monday 5-9pm. Burial will be in St. John’s cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA.
