Brenda Alves

November 27, 1949 — October 21, 2016

Brenda Joyce Ann (DeMello) Alves, 66, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on October 21, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at Rhode Island Hospital after a long, courageous battle with Lupus and Chronic Heart Disease.  She was the wife of George Alves.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, and daughter of the late Horace and Mary DeMello, she graduated from New Bedford High in 1967 and worked as a legal secretary for Prescott, Bullard and Mcleod during her brief professional career.  Her most fulfilling roles were that of loving wife, encouraging mother and proud grandmother.  An avid collector of cookbooks, she could always be found enjoying an iced coffee while perusing her most recent addition.  She enjoyed travel, good food and time spent with great friends.

Brenda is survived by her husband, George Alves, to whom she was happily married for 45 years; a daughter, Lisa Marie Cohen and her husband Richard of Lunenburg, two loving granddaughters, Abigail Grace and Cassandra Leigh, who were the pride of her life; a sister Diana Rapoza and her longtime companion Daniel Raposo as well as her brother and sister in law, David and Vivian Alves of New Bedford.  She had many friends who loved and enjoyed her company.

Her funeral will be conducted Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with a mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 a.m.  Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery.  Visiting hours Wednesday evening in the funeral home from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
