Deolinda Vieira

September 6, 1920 — December 12, 2011

Deolinda (Novo) Vieira 91 of New Bedford passed away after a brief illness at St. Luke’s hospital. She was the widow of Augusto R. “Gus” Vieira Jr. and daughter of the late Manuel and Anna (Nunes) Novo. She was born in New Bedford and was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Vieira was a communicant of the Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus church. She was formerly employed as a stitcher at Kay Windsor until her retirement. She was a member of the Holy Name Couples Club and the Royal Travelers. She and her husband won many awards in New England for ballroom dancing with the Arthur Murray studios. She was an outstanding seamstress making many wedding dresses, christening dresses and First Communion dresses. She loved being with her family and hosting many family functions at her summer cottage in Fairhaven. She also attended many of her children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and recitals. Survivors include her children Brian Vieira and his wife Robin of Rehoboth, Wayne Vieira and his wife Joan of Fairhaven, Linda Huston and her husband Jerry Jr. of New Bedford; her brother Victor Novo and his wife Jennie of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Her funeral mass will be said 10am Friday at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus church. Visiting hours are Thursday 5-8pm. In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Greater New Bedford PO Box 1506 New Bedford, MA 02740.
