- George Alves, 69, died unexpectedly on June 22, 2017 doing what he loved, with those he loved, while on vacation in Sao Miguel, Portugal. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was deeply rooted in the community. A naval veteran and retired member of the New Bedford Fire Department he was a man devoted to honor and service. George was the owner of Alves Electric, fitting as he brought an insatiable light to the lives of all he knew. He was predeceased by Brenda, his wife of 45 years, and his parents Isabella and Joseph Alves. George is survived by his only daughter Lisa and her husband Richard Cohen of Lunenburg, MA. He has three grandchildren – Abigail and Cassandra will remember him fondly and he will be reunited with Jacob Austin in heaven. He will be missed by his brother, former City Councilor David Alves, his wife Vivian and his nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law Diana Rapoza and her longtime companion Daniel Raposo will also affectionately remember his enveloping love and laughter. George worked hard, but played even harder enjoying golf, bowling, billiards, travel and admiring classic cars. He loved a great meal and enjoyed a good wine even more. Friends and family will surely miss his zest for life. He will be laid to his eternal rest on Monday.A funeral mass will be said at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church at 8:45 AM with interment to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
