Jacintho "Jessie" Ferro

February 24, 1922 — July 21, 2013

Bedford  Jacintho S. “Jessie” Ferro 91 Of South Dartmouth passed away Sunday July 21, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Home. He was the husband of Alzida “Elsie” (Alves) Ferro and the son of the late Jacintho A. and Maria (Piedade) Ferro. He was born in New Bedford and lived in Dartmouth for many years.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church. Mr. Ferro was the manager for his family’s business, Willow Tree Ice Cream and was a repairman for Adams and Adams Amusements. He was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran serving aboard the battleship TEXAS for 3 ½ years, seeing action at Okinawa, Iwo Jima the Philippines, Africa and the Normandy invasion. He had been a musician since the age of 14 and was a well-known tuba player. He was a founding member of the Tri County Symphonic orchestra and the Dartmouth Community band. He played with every local band and a Dixieland band on Cape Cod. He was president emeritus of the musicians’ union. He was the president of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in 1952.Mr. Ferro was also a 4 th degree Knight of Columbus belonging to the St. Isidor Council. He was also a longtime volunteer for the Dartmouth Council on Aging. Survivors include his wife; his brothers Jose Ferro of South Dartmouth, Paul Ferro of South Dartmouth, George Ferro of Mansfield, MA; his sisters Margaret Alves of South Dartmouth, Sr. Cecelia Ferro and Sr. Mary Ferro both Sisters of St. Dorothy, Staten Island, N.Y.; Many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews and 24 Godchildren. He was the brother of the late Gilly, John, Noe and Anibal Ferro. His funeral mass will be said Thursday  9 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church. Visiting hours will be Wednesday 4-7pm. Burial in the Veterans National cemetery, Bourne, MA will be private. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dartmouth Council on Aging.Bedford
