John Camacho, 84, of Fairhaven passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 26, 2023. Beloved husband of Alice J. (Aubin) Camacho with whom he shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.

John was the son of the late Amadeu C. Camacho and the late Maria C. (Freitas Moinheiro) Camacho. He is predeceased by his son John Amadeu Camacho, two brothers, Amadeu Camacho and Albert Camacho, and his two sisters, Alice Ferro and Laura Constant.

John was born in New Bedford and raised his family in Acushnet. He then moved and built a home on West Island where he spent his retirement years. His West Island home was very special to him, as it was built on the site of his family summer cottage, where he had spent every summer since he was 10 years old.

John proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a young man and went on to become a machinist for many years at Morse Cutting Tools in the City of New Bedford. He spent his retirement years driving a school bus, and especially enjoyed driving the routes to and from sporting events.

Enjoying time with family on West Island was John’s all time favorite. Most weekends, if John wasn’t quahogging, he was making sure that his next batch of Poncha had the right amount of sugar, the correct ice cubes...and that his Carne de Espeto had the perfect amount of his secret seasoned salt.

John was an avid sports fan and loved following his favorite teams for his entire life. Many Sundays, he could be found with friends cheering on the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts. He also loved watching basketball, especially any team that Lebron James was on. But, his most beloved team was the NY Yankees. He would not miss listening to a game (his favorite way) or watching the game on his basement TV.... Often, both at the same time!

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Debra A. (Camacho) Lambalot of Nashua, NH, and her husband Thomas Lambalot, and Danielle C. (Camacho) Cenci of Fairhaven and her husband Mark Cenci, and six grandchildren, Lindsey (Lambalot) O’Connor and her husband Chad O’Connor of Bedford, NH, Lauren Lambalot of Nashua, NH, Hannah Lambalot of Washington, DC, Matthew Lambalot of Medford, MA, Domenic and Marianna Cenci of Fairhaven, MA, and three great-grandchildren, Grayson, Madison, and Emerson O’Connor of Bedford, NH, as well as a sister-in-Law Doris Camacho of Fairhaven and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 26th, 2024 at 2pm, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St. New Bedford. Immediately following, a Memorial gathering will be held at Merrill’s on the Waterfront, 36 Homers Wharf, New Bedford. A private burial will take place at a later date.
