Jonathan D. Fernandes

Jul 11, 1975 — May 16, 2026

New Bedford

Jonathan Fernandes passed away at the hospital on 5/16 from a brief illness. Jonathan was the husband of Lisa Medeiros (deceased) and the son of Maria (Kelly) Patricio, and his stepdad, Arthur Patricio (deceased). He leaves behind his daughter, Kayla Fernandes, stepchildren Lizzie and Tony Medeiros, his brother Joshua Patricio and wife Kira, their boys Benjamin and Zachary, his father, Jose Fernandes Jr, and his wife Susie, and step-sisters, Victoria and Lauren.

Jonathan had a larger-than-life personality that always took over the room from the moment he arrived. He had the gift of gab and storytelling and seemed to know something about everything. He never stopped talking and loved to tell about his many adventures he encountered throughout his life with his many friends and his many travels. We were forced to listen to some of them over and over but it never got old. He entertained us constantly with whatever was going on in his life and the life of others, present and past. He forgot nothing. As a teenager, he loved to ATV with his friends, fishing, and enjoyed the many family camping trips at Horseneck beach, Cape Cod and New Hampshire. He was always helping someone do something, always on the go. He was a mechanic from a teenager. His first car was a stripped jeep he built from spare parts from the junkyards and salvage yards. Cars were his passion. He loved working on cars and was our personal mechanic for all of our vehicles, and those of his friends. He was self-taught and could take apart an engine and put it back together without a thought or a manual. It was a natural gift. When he lived at home we often had a large table on our sun porch with car parts all laid out that he had taken off something he was working on. We were amazed as to how he could easily put it all back together again.

But Jonathan’s biggest love was his daughter Kayla. He was a proud dad at her high school graduation last year and when she completed her first year of college this month. A quick phone call would turn into hours, with Kayla mostly listening. He talked about anything and everything. He also had a great love for his step-children Lizzie and Tony who unfortunately did not live close by but he repeatedly would reminisce about their outings together. He loved to tell Kayla stories about her growing up, about her mother Lisa, Lizzie, Tony, their adventures and his own life experiences.

Without Jonathan there is a big hole in our family. He’ll be deeply missed, and with the short time we had him, every moment greatly treasured.

Jonathan also leaves behind several Aunts and Uncles, Nelson and Linda Guerra, Delilah Evangelista and Inez Patricio, cousins, Nicole and Brendan Coon, Matthew and Colin Guerra, David Evangelista, Jay and Lori Evangelista, Frank Jr. and Dottie Baptista, Manny & Sherri Baptista, David & Hannah Baptista, Chris Baptista, and all of their families. Also, many great Aunts and Uncles, cousins and their families, and his beloved rescued French bulldog - Cash.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined.
