New Bedford

Maria D. Escaleira, 89, of New Bedford, passed away June 30, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Erminia Fernandes Alves and longtime companion of the late John Frade. She was born in  Beca, Tras Os Montes, Portugal and had lived in New Bedford for many years. Maria was a communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was employed as a stitcher for various manufacturing companies until her retirement. Maria loved being with her family and friends. She also enjoyed going to Festas. Survivors include her brother Elizeu Alves and his wife Louise of New Bedford, her sisters Gloria Alves of New Bedford and Mercedes Franco and her husband Jose of North Carolina. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Jose Escaleira. Her visitation will be held on Monday July 7, from 5 - 7 pm. Maria's Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Tuesday, July 8, at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
