Robert D. Martin 72 of New Bedford passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, of pancreatic cancer, on Sunday February 5, 2012. He was the son of the late Charles S. and Helen (Gillis) Martin. He was born in Ridgewood, NY on May 29, 1939. He served in the United States Navy from August 1956 thru March 1960 as a Quartermaster on the U.S.S.Forest Royal and from March 1960 thru August 1962 in the U.S. Naval reserves where he was honorably discharged. Mr. Martin was a commercial and industrial metal building contractor for over 40 years and constructed many of the buildings you see in the north and south terminals in New Bedford, today. He was a life member of the Elks and a former member of the 6 th Bristol club. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and the many trips they took together. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Pauline (Kalles), his daughter Donna Medeiros and her husband Paul, his granddaughters Jennifer Pezzatti and Amy Medeiros, his great-granddaughters Mya Rae Medeiros and Makenna Joy Pezzatti all of New Bedford. His brothers Charles Martin and his partner Maria of New Bedford, Donald Martin and his partner Sharon of Martha’s Vineyard. He is pre deceased by his son Gary Scott Martin and his brother Thomas Martin. His visiting hours are Tuesday 4-8pm with a funeral service at 5pm. At his request he will be cremated and the burial of his cremains will be private. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, earmarked for pancreatic cancer research.
