Zulmira (Cardoso) Marmelo, 86, of New Bedford, passed away on Thursday, July 6 th at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Born in Linhares da Beira, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Cardoso and late Maria de
Lurdes (Abrantes) Cardoso and wife of the late Gonçalo Figueiredo Marmelo. Gonçalo & Zulmira married
in 1961 and moved to Santo Amaro de Oeiras, outside Lisbon before coming to the United States in
November of 1974. She was a kind and gentle woman who worked for many years as a seamstress for
various companies and enjoyed cooking and traveling to Portugal.
Zulmira is survived by her sons; Jorge Marmelo and wife, Mary, Rui Marmelo and wife, Maité Hernandez;
grandchildren; Andres Marmelo, Claudia Marmelo, Julia Marmelo, Lucas Marmelo; sister, Emilia
Cardoso; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, Eliseu Cardoso and sister,
Fernanda Cardoso.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 12th from 8am-10am at the Boulevard Funeral Home, 223
Ashley Blvd, New Bedford with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11am at Our Lady of the Immaculate
Conception Church. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
